Notes:
Bihar will host the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 in April, marking its addition to the Khelo India map. For the first time, Bihar will also host the Khelo India Para Games, following the Youth Games with a 10-15 day gap. The first Para Games edition was held in Delhi last year. The Khelo India Youth Games 2023 were in Tamil Nadu. Bihar plays a key role in the Ministry’s infrastructure development and grassroots athlete support.

Eight-year-old Divith Reddy from Hyderabad won the Under-8 World Cadets Chess Championship in Montesilvano, Italy. He scored 9/11 points, tying with Sattwik Swain and Ziming Guo, but secured gold due to a better tie-break score. Divith, with a FIDE rating of 1784, won his first four matches, lost two, but then won five consecutive matches to clinch the title. The FIDE World Cadet Championships 2024 were held from November 14-27, 2024, in Montesilvano, Italy, with categories for U8, U10, and U12.

Notes:
PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen won the women’s and men’s titles at the 2024 Syed Modi International badminton tournament. This marked Sindhu’s first BWF (Badminton World Federation) title since the 2022 Singapore Open, ending her title drought. Sindhu defeated China’s Wu Luo Yu 21-14, 21-16 in the final. The tournament was held at Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium, Lucknow, from November 26 to December 1, 2024.

Khelo India Winter Games 2025 will be held in Ladakh (ice events: Jan 23-27) and Jammu & Kashmir (snow events: Feb 22-25). The games mark the start of the Khelo India season, followed by Youth & Para Games in Bihar in April and University Games. The Winter Games began in 2020, with participation growing from 1,000 athletes in the first edition to more than 1,500 in 2022. In 2024, more than 1,200 participants, including 700 athletes, competed for 136 medals. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with Sports Authority of India, managed the 2024 edition. These games aim to identify talent for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Dommaraju Gukesh, at 18, became the youngest chess world champion, surpassing Garry Kasparov’s record. He achieved this by defeating Ding Liren after a three-week battle in Singapore. Gukesh showed exceptional focus, minimal social media use, and meditative concentration during the tournament. Starting chess at 11, his dedication and obsession with becoming No. 1 set him apart. Despite setbacks in the championship, he responded with resilience and readiness to fight. Chess experts, including Susan Polgar, believe Gukesh has not yet reached his peak potential. He joins an elite lineage of chess champions, the youngest ever to do so.

The Indian women’s junior hockey team won the 10th Women’s Hockey Junior Asia Cup by defeating China 3-2 in the penalty shootout in Muscat, Oman, on December 15, 2024. India successfully defended their title, having also won the previous edition in 2023. The tournament, held from December 7 to 15, 2024, is for players under 21 and organized by the Asian Hockey Federation. The top five teams—India, China, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia—qualified for the 2025 International Hockey Federation (FIH) Women’s Junior World Cup in Chile. The first Women’s Junior Asia Cup was held in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and won by South Korea.

The 4th Asian Roll Ball Championship was held in Goa, India from December 16–19, 2024. The event took place at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium in Margao.  The championship was a collaboration between the Roll Ball Federation of India and the Goa Roll Ball Association. It was supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India.  The championship was a celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and cultural exchange. It was also a significant step in promoting the sport of roll ball, which is gaining popularity globally.

Notes:
Bihar will host the Women’s Kabaddi World Cup in March 2025 at the indoor hall of the Rajgir Sports Academy. Fourteen countries, including India, China, Japan, South Korea, and others, are expected to participate. Bihar is hosting the event for the second time, after the first edition in 2012 at Patliputra Sports Complex, Patna. The Women’s Kabaddi World Cup is an international competition organized by the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF).

Karnataka’s M. Raghu and Haryana’s Devika Sihag won the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, at the 86th Senior National Badminton Championships 2024. The tournament was organized by the Badminton Association of India and hosted by the Karnataka Badminton Association in Bengaluru from December 20 to 24, 2024. In the men’s singles final, M. Raghu defeated former champion Mithun Manjunath of Karnataka with a score of 14-21, 21-14, 24-22, claiming his first senior national championship title.

The 74th Senior National Basketball Championship is organized by the Gujarat State Basketball Association under the Basketball Federation of India. The tournament is hosted at Sidsar Sports Complex Indoor Stadium, Bhavnagar, Gujarat. More than 900 national and international players, along with more than 150 officials and state representatives, are participating. India aims to host the 2036 Olympics, with Gujarat planning five world-class sports events in 2025, 2026, and 2029.
