August 22 is annually celebrated as Madras Day, to commemorate the foundation day of the city of Madras (now Chennai).
It was on this day in 1639 that the town of Madrasapatnam, was purchased by the East India Company (EIC) from local kings. After 1947, the state and the city continued to be referred to as Madras. It was carved out of the Madras presidency that covered parts of other South- Indian states. In 1969, the state was officially renamed Tamil Nadu and in 1996, the capital city of Madras became Chennai.

The 14th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting between India and Bangladesh was held in New Delhi on 21st and 22nd August. During the meeting, India and Bangladesh reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering customs cooperation and streamlining cross-border trade
A set of bilateral issues like opening of new land customs stations, easing port restrictions, development of road and rail infrastructure and pre-arrival exchange of customs data were deliberated during the event.

The upcoming Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023 for women would be held in Jharkhand from 27th October to 5th November 2023.
This is the 7^th edition of the tournament in which Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and hosts India are expected to participate. Indian Women’s Team won the prestigious title in 2016 and in the following edition in 2018, they finished runners-up.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that he is set to unveil a 100 per cent ethanol-fueled variant of Toyota’s Innova car.
The union minister had last year launched a hydrogen-powered car, Toyota Mirai EV. This car will be World’s first BS-VI (Stage-II), electrified flex-fuel vehicle.

The President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou conferred Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour. The Order of Honour was established in 1975.
The Honour is conferred by the President of Greece to Prime Ministers and eminent personalities who by reason of their distinguished position, have contributed to enhancing the stature of Greece.

Notes:
Siebold’s water snake, a mildly venomous species, is being sighted regularly on the Yamuna floodplain since the beginning of the monsoon in June this year, say ecologists. This suggests that the species has made its way back to its natural habitat. The species is endemic to Asia.
The snake was said to have disappeared from Delhi for decades and its presence was later confirmed in 2015.

The Tele-Law 2.0 initiative was launched under the Tele-Law program of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice.
This program, operating under the DISHA Scheme, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering 50 lakh legal consultations. This version consists of fusion of Tele-Law Services with Nyaya Bandhu pro bono legal services, a merger to further enhance citizen accessibility to legal aid.

Notes:
To eliminate hazardous cleaning, stop deaths of sewer and septic tank workers and ensure their safety and dignity, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) have jointly formulated a scheme namely National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE).
The scheme is to be implemented in all 4800+ Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of the country, during the three years up to 2025-26 with an outlay of Rs. 349.70 crore.

Notes:
Kolkata Port, also known as Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port (SMP), is offering nearly 60 acres of its land in the city for the state’s first multi-modal logistics park (MMLP).
None of the multi-modal logistics parks proposed across the country is in the port area. Here, more than 25 acres of warehousing space is available, there is a single window system. It is strategically located very close to highways, and it is well-connected to Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and North-Eastern India.
