Young Advocates Should Have Fixed Minimum Wages: Report
As per the ‘Corona Unlocks: the Vulnerabilities of Advocates’ Report by Madurai-based Lawyers Fraternity Tamil Nadu and the Bengaluru-based Indian Social Institute. The main idea of the report is that young advocates should have monthly stipend in order to safeguard them from financial volatility and uncertainty.
Highlights
- Four major objectives were researched in the report – the financial vulnerability of advocates during the COVID 19 lockdown, impact of lockdown on the advocates, efficacy of using technology and recommendations to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the State Government and the advocates’ fraternity to reach out to the needy advocates.
- A stipend has been recommended to address these four types of issues facing the advocates in the country.
- With such a scheme, the financial stress of the young advocates can be reduced substantially but it also should be ensured that only proper advocates should be covered under this scheme.
- There is a need to create a corpus or emergency fund to help the advocates during the times of emergency because advocates often find it difficult to get loans from banks or lending institutions.
- There should be a cooperative bank or thrift society in all bar associations so that the advocates can avail loans easily.
- The report points out the fact most of the offices do not pay monthly salary to the juniors and this has to be altered at the earliest. So, the state government and the advocates should rise up to the occasion to maintain the dignity of the profession.
