Yoon Suk Yeol: New President of South Korea – Update (May, 2022)

On 10th May 2022, Yoon Suk-yeol was sworn in as the new president of South Korea in Seoul’s National Assembly. He took office at a time when there are high ongoing tensions with North Korea.

When was the election result announced?

In March 2022, the election results were announced and Yoon had won the election by a very slim margin.

What promises did the new president make regarding North Korea?

Yoon Suk-yeol has promised to deal sternly with North Korea and Kim Jong Un while also keeping open a channel for dialogue. He wants to settle talks with North Korea peacefully but will deal with any matter sternly if such a need arises.

What promise did Yoon Suk-yeol make regarding the country’s domestic issues?

Various domestic issues were addressed by the new president which he will be working upon. This includes slowing of the country’s economic growth and rising unemployment. He is looking to boost the economy as well as improve the country’s scientific as well as technological advancements.

Yoon Suk-yeol has replaced Moon Jae-in as the new president of South Korea. Jae-in was the 12th president of the country and was in charge from 2017 to 2022.
