World Wrestling Championships: India’s bags 5 medals

At the World Wrestling Championships held in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan), India’s Rahul Aware bagged a bronze medal in men’s 61kg category bout while Deepak Punia won silver in men’s 86 kg freestyle. Rahul Aware won against his opponent Tyler Lee Graff with 11-4.

Key Highlights

India finished with its best-ever medal haul at World Championships by winning 5 medals in Nur-Sultan. The 5 medal includes- 1 silver and 4 bronze medals. India’s previous best show was at World Championships in 2013, when India had 3 in their bag courtesy- Amir Dahiya (silver), Bajrang Punia (bronze) and Sandeep Tulsi Yadav (bronze in Greco-Roman).

Rahul Aware’s was last Indian in contention at tournament and his bronze helped India finish with their best-ever medal haul (5).

Deepak Punia by winning silver has become only 5th Indian to reach the final at senior World Championships. After Deepak’s loss, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar remains the only Indian to have won a World Championships title in 2010.

Deepak Punia was 4th Indian wrestler to secure his berth at 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Other wrestlers to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in their respective weight categories include- Bajrang Punia, Ravi Kumar and Vinesh Phogat.
