World Post Day: 9 October

United Nation celebrates World Post Day every year on 9 October. This day is commemorated as the anniversary of Universal Postal Union (UPU), which started in Switzerland in 1874.

Key facts:

• World Post Day was mooted by an Indian, Anand Mohan Narula in 1969 at Universal Postal Union Congress in Tokyo. Since then, World Post Day has been celebrated all over the world.
• A special commemorative cover to mark 140 years of Indian Postal Service is released during the World Post Day.
• The year 2019 marks the 140th anniversary of the advent of Indian Postal service.

Significance of the day:

• The significance of the day is to raise awareness of the postal sector in the everyday lives of both people and businesses and its contribution to the development of countries in both social and economic parlance.
• The day encourages member countries of the UN to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post?s role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.

Several conferences, seminars and workshops, cultural, sport and other recreational activities are organised to mark World Post Day.
