World Population to Peak in 2064 and Will Shrink after That: Lancet
The Lancet Journal has come out with a report stating that the world population should come down after 2064 after reaching the peak. It is estimated that in 2064, the world population should touch 9.7 billion and will fall to 8.8 billion by the end of the century. The report has also stated that India will be the most populous country in the world by 2100.
According to the Lancet report, 23 countries will see a drastic reduction in population including Japan, Thailand, Italy and Spain. On the other hand, Nigeria will be the second-most populous country followed by China, the USA and Pakistan, by the end of this century. Though it is expected that the working-age population will reduce, India will still remain one of the four major powers along with China, the US and Nigeria.
The age structure will also see a paradigm shift by 2100 because 2.37 billion people will be over 65 years of age by that time compared to only 1.7 billion under 20 years. In 2100, India, Nigeria, China and the US will be the four major powers with the largest working-age population. Whereas China is expected to overtake the US as the largest economy of the world in 2035, the US will once again regain its status in 2098 due to immigration.
