World Happiness Report 2025
The World Happiness Report 2025 was published recently by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford. It ranks countries based on citizens’ self-assessed life evaluations.
Methodology of the Happiness Report
The rankings are based on surveys conducted globally, focusing on individuals’ perceptions of their lives. The study is a collaboration between the Wellbeing Research Centre, Gallup, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Factors assessed include GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, social support, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
Key Findings on Happiness Factors
Researchers identified that happiness is influenced by more than just wealth. Trust and social connections play crucial roles. Sharing meals and having reliable social support correlate with higher happiness levels. The belief in communal kindness also enhances overall contentment. Interestingly, people tend to underestimate the kindness of others, as actual rates of returning lost items are much higher than expected.
Global Happiness Rankings
In the 2025 report, Finland leads the rankings, followed by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. Israel ranks eighth despite ongoing conflicts. Costa Rica and Mexico enter the top ten for the first time, ranking sixth and tenth respectively. The United States has dropped to its lowest position at 24, while the United Kingdom ranks at 23. Afghanistan remains the unhappiest country, followed by Sierra Leone and Lebanon.
Social Support and Loneliness Trends
A concerning trend is the increasing loneliness among young adults. Nearly 19% of young adults reported having no social support, increase since 2006. This lack of connection can lead to decreased happiness levels. The report emphasises the need for stronger community bonds to promote overall well-being.
India’s Position in the Happiness Rankings
India ranks 118 out of 147 countries in the 2025 report. While it scores well on social support due to its community-focused culture, it struggles with perceptions of freedom. India’s neighbours, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and China, rank lower than expected, with China at 68.
Implications of Caring and Sharing
The report puts stress on the importance of caring and sharing in enhancing happiness. It marks the reciprocal benefits of kindness, where both the giver and receiver experience increased well-being. The findings suggest that encouraging community connections can improve happiness levels across societies.
