World Haemophilia Day
Every year of April 17th is recognized as World Haemophilia Day. It will mark the 30th World Haemophilia Day this year.
Need of this Recognition
In order to increase awareness of haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders along with better diagnosis and access to care for the millions who remain without treatment.
About Haemophilia
Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot normally which could lead to spontaneous bleeding as well as bleeding through injuries. It mostly affects men as per the studies.
How it causes?
Haemophilia is caused by a mutation or change in one of the genes that provides instructions for making the clotting factor proteins needed to form a blood clot and this change or mutation can prevent the clotting protein from working properly hence causing Haemophilic condition.
Key Facts
• Haemophilia is caused by a defect in the X chromosome.
• Its are rarer disorder world wild and in the country-wise data India emerges with the highest count at nearly 19000 suffering from it.
• Till today there is no cure for Haemophilia. Genetically engineered clotting factor medicines are used to prevent and treat prolonged bleeding.
World Haemophilia Day was started in 1989 by the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) in honour of WFH founder Frank Schnabel’s birthday.
