World Food Safety Day 2019
World Food Safety Day 2019 was observed on June 7 with the theme Food Safety, everyone s business . The World Food Safety Day 2019 was facilitated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
It was the first ever the first-ever World Food Safety Day. The United Nations General Assembly had adopted the resolution for the effect in December 2018.
The initiative of World Food Safety Day aims to through light the importance of safe food and to reduce the problems related to it.
Food Safety: Need of the Hour
- WHO data shows that almost 1 in 10 people in the world fall ill after eating contaminated, with almost 1,25,000 deaths of children under 5 years.
- Around 600 million annual cases of the foodborne disease have been reported every year.
- Unsafe food hinders development in many low- and middle-income economies. As a result, these countries which lose around US$ 95 billion in productivity associated with illness, disability, and premature death suffered by workers.
These facts and figures pushed United Nations to take a step towards food safety, by linking it many of the Sustainable Development Goals, like eradicating hunger, preventing diseases, promoting fair trade and improving sustainable agriculture.
