World Day of Social Justice – Update (February, 2022)

On 20th February, the World Day of Social Justice is observed annually. This day works towards promoting social justice, which includes efforts to tackle issues like exclusion, poverty, unemployment, gender inequality, social protection, and human rights.

Overview:

The United Nations General Assembly declared 20 February as the World Day of Social Justice, which was accepted on 26 November 2007, and observed annually since 2009.

Significance of this day

Many organizations, such as the United Nations, and the International Labour Organization (ILO), have issued statements highlighting the role of social justice.

The United Nations General Assembly recognizes that social justice and social development are crucial for achieving as well as sustaining international security and peace. Thus, without social justice, there won’t be security, peace, or support towards fundamental freedom and human rights.

The theme of World Day of Social Justice, 2022

‘Achieving Social Justice through Formal Employment’ is the theme of World Day of Social Justice 2022. The theme of this year has been selected keeping in mind that almost 60% of the world’s employed population make their living in the informal economy. And it has been noticed that these individuals are the ones lacking social protection as well as employment-related benefits.

It is necessary to eliminate inequality and poverty, boost productivity, and ensure long-term sustainability in order to support the transition to formal employment. Hence, this year the UN has focussed on strengthening the ability of businesses and people who are looking to enter the formal economy.
