Will Ukraine Peace Summit Bring Global Resolution?
About 100 delegations from different countries and international groups met in Switzerland recently for a summit to talk about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The event took place at the Burgenstock resort in Stansstad and featured prominent attendees such as the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, and leaders from the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
Key Points of the Ukraine Peace Communique
The summit agreed on the Ukraine peace communique, which listed important factors needed for security in the area:
- Following the rules set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), making sure that all nuclear facilities are safe, especially the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
- To improve food security around the world, keeping the free flow of Ukrainian agricultural goods is important.
- In the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, protecting civilian port facilities and merchant ships from attack.
- Mandating the exchange of all prisoners and the return of unlawfully displaced Ukrainian civilians, including children.
Who Signed the Ukraine Peace Communique?
A total of 82 delegations signed the communique, expressing a broad consensus among the majority of participants. Noteworthy signatories included nations from various regions, including Europe, Asia, and the Americas, demonstrating widespread global support.
Non-Signatories and Their Reasons
Several countries, though, chose not to sign the paper:
- India: India said that Russia’s absence from the meeting was a major flaw and that any real effort to promote peace must involve everyone.
- Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia stressed how important it is to get Russia involved in talks in order to make sure that the peace process is credible.
- South Africa: South Africa was worried that Israel would be there and questioned the sincerity of a communique that said it was based on respect for international law while accusations of war crimes against Israel were still new.
