Will merit or quota be the criterion for admission in the super specialty courses?

The Supreme Court has adopted somewhat very stringent approach towards admissions to the super specialty courses. The Court has directed that so far as super specialty courses such as neurosurgery and cardiology are concerned, there should be no reservation at all even on the basis of institutional preference and admissions should be granted purely on merit on an all India basis. In Indira Sawney v. Union of India the Court held that for certain services and certain posts, it may not be advisable to apply the rule of reservation. These are posts where merit alone counts. The Court has included the posts in super specialties in medicine, engineering and other scientific and technical subjects in its list.
