Why UK is considering Changes To the Graduate Route Visa?
The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is thinking about making changes to the Graduate Route Visa (GRV) program. GRVs should only be given to the “best and brightest,” according to the proposal. This is meant to cut down on the number of foreign students overall and especially on the false information spread by education recruitment agents. This move could have big effects on Indians, who are the biggest group of people who get study visas for the UK.
What is a Graduate Route Visa (GRV)?
The Graduate Residence Visa (GRV) was introduced in July 2021 and lets foreign students stay in the UK for up to three years after graduation to look for work. Potential applicants must be in the UK with a legal study visa at the time of the application and have proof from their school that they have completed the course successfully.
Indians and the GRV
For Indian students, the GRV is especially popular because it not only helps them find work after they graduate, but it also makes it easier to settle in the UK. This path is especially appealing because it sometimes lets families get back together.
The Popularity of the UK as a Study Destination for Indians
The number of student cards given to Indians rose by 54% from June 2022 to June 2023, showing that the UK is still a popular choice for Indian students. About 42% of all GRV holders are Indian, which is more than any other country. Any changes to the GRV system will have a bigger effect on Indian students in the UK. The suggested changes to the GRV are part of larger discussions in the UK about immigration and education policy. These changes could have long-lasting effects on the country’s appeal as a top choice for foreign students.
More About Graduate Route Visa (GRV)
With the UK’s Graduate Route Visa (GRV), foreign graduates from approved UK universities can stay in the country to work or look for work after they graduate. It has been open since July 2021 and doesn’t need a sponsor or a minimum pay, but applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree. People with a bachelor’s or master’s degree can stay on the visa for two years. People with a PhD can stay on the visa for three years. People who take the road can change jobs, work from home, and advance their careers in the UK. The visa can’t be extended and doesn’t count toward settlement. Applications must be made from inside the UK. Graduates can, however, change their work visas to ones that allow them to settle down. No limit on the number of applications, so all grads who are qualified can send them.
