Who was U.R. Ananthamurthy?
U.R. Ananthamurthy was one of the greatest writers of India who passed away due to renal failure on August 22, 2014. The sad demise has been widely condoled by eminent personalities in the literature field and also President Pranab Mukherjee.
Honors
A well-known writer and a critic of Kannada language his contributions won him a Jnanpith Award for Kannada language, the sixth writer recipient of the highest honor for literature in India. He was also chosen as a finalist for Man Booker Prize in 2013. In addition, he was also honored by Indian Government in 1998 with a Padma Bhushan.Career and Literary works
Ananthamurthy believed in an active life and had served on many eminent positions during his career. From being the Chairman of National Book Trust of India in 1992, he served as an elected Chairman of Sahitya Academy in 1993. Thereafter, he was later chosen as the Chairman of Film and Television Institute of India twice notably. He also kept meeting youngsters in his lectures at many universities in India and abroad as a guest faculty.
Some of the widely acclaimed works of Ananthamurthy are Samskara, Baraa, Avasthe ,Diksha, Bharathi Pura etc. Some of his works were made into movies and were also translated into other languages.
He leaves behind his wife Esther Ananthamurthy and two children- Sharat and Shraddha.
He leaves behind a rich legacy and an emptiness in the literary world which will be difficult to plug.
