Who was Sucheta Kripalani?

Sucheta Kripalani is a very important figure in Indian politics because she was the first woman to be Chief Minister of an Indian state, Uttar Pradesh. From October 2, 1963, to March 13, 1967, she was in office. At the time she took office, there were a lot of changes in politics, mostly because of the Kamaraj Plan, which aimed to bring Congress leadership back to life in all states.

Rise to Leadership

Sucheta Kripalani became Chief Minister because of a unique set of events and her well-known reputation as a good leader. The idea of Sucheta Kripalani becoming Chief Minister started with J. B. Kripalani’s suggestion during Chandra Bhanu Gupta’s visit. This idea came about after talks and thoughts within the high ranks of the Congress party. The final choice was made at a CLP meeting in Lucknow, where MLAs voted anonymously. Sucheta Kripalani beat Kamalapati Tripathi by 99 votes.

Sucheta Kripalani was very important in putting progressive policies and changes into place while she was in charge. Some of the most important steps were not charging girls for school up to Class 10, opening two colleges, and giving more jobs to people from Scheduled Castes. She also dealt with safety issues, especially in the Chambal Valley, and oversaw the creation of projects like the UP Awas Vikas Parishad to improve infrastructure. Her government also worked hard to fight corruption and stressed how important honesty is in public service.
