Who was Rousseau and what was his concept of popular sovereignty?

[Jurisprudence] -‘Social Contract’ and ‘natural law’ received a new interpretation from Rousseau. He developed a theory of popular sovereignty in which liberty and equality and freedom and authority were reconciled. According to him, state and law is one and the same thing and are the product of general will and not of reason as the jurists in the seventeenth century proclaimed.
