The Communist leader, Ms. Bidhya Devi Bhandari (54) has been elected as the first woman President of Nepal,. Ms. Bhandari succeeded Mr. Ram Baran Yadav who was elected as the country’s first President in 2008 after Nepal was declared a Republic following the abolition of a 240-year-old monarchy. Previously, Ms. Bhandari was the vice-chairperson of the Unified Marxist–Leninist party of Nepal and chair of the All Nepal Women Association.
