Who is ganpatrao deshmukh?

Ganpatrao Deshmukh is a veteran politician from Maharashtra who belongs to Peasants and Workers Party. He is an MLA from Sangole constituency of Solapur, Maharashtra. He won 2014 assembly elections by defeating Shahujibapu Patil of Shivsena by a margin of 25,224 votes and this was his record victory for eleventh time.

Since his college days leftist ideology has influenced him deeply. His political career began in 1962, when he was elected as an MLA for the very first time from Sangole constituency. In his entire political career he has faced defeat only two times one in 1972 and another in 1985 .He has also served as minister twice, in 1978 and 1999. In 1978 he served under the then Chief Minister Sharad Pawar-led Progresssive Democratic Front and in 1999 under Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, when PWP allied with the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party. For the rest of his political career he remained in opposition.

Deshmukh has worked a lot for his drought prone constituency. He is credited for bringing water to his constituency through Tembhu lift irrigation project in Satara district. This step benefited the farmers in his constituency. He has lived a simple life throughout his political life. In September 2019 he made a statement about not contesting in 2019 Assembly elections which left his supporters disappointed.
