Dakshin Gangotri Explanation Dakshin Gangotri was the first scientific base station of India situated in Antarctica which was established during the Third Indian Expedition to Antarctica. The construction work started just after the landing in Antarctica on December 27, 1983. The team completed its major task of constructing the permanent station by February 25, 1984 in a time of eight weeks which was a world record. This was the first time Indian team started staying in winter in Antarctica to carry out scientific works.
