What is the purpose of Campbell-Stokes Recorder?

Campbell-Stokes Recorder is a device used for recording and measuring the duration of bright sunshine over a period of time.

How it works: A fixed spherical lens burns an image of the sun on to a sensitized recording-card, when the sun moves, the position of the image also moves, and a line will be burnt out by continuous sunlight.
