What is the object of Freedom of Information Act, 2002?

The objective of Freedom of Information Act, 2002, is to provide for freedom to every citizen to secure access to information under the control of public authorities, consistent with public interest, in order to promote openness, transparency and accountability in administration and in relation to matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The Act provides for making information held by executive agencies of the State available to the public unless it comes within any one of the specific categories of matters exempt from public disclosure. It is designed to prevent abuse of discretionary power of the Governmental agencies by requiring them to make public certain information about their working and work product.
