American Football League (AFL) was merged with National Football League (NFL) in the year 1966. Initially The AFL began play in 1960 as a competitor to the NFL. The two leagues began merging in 1966. They played separate regular-season schedules through 1969. In 1970 the NFL broke into two conferences.
