What is Mandolin?

Mandolin is a moderately-sized string instrument that usually has 8 strings that are plucked with a pick like a lute. It is smaller than the Veena, Sitar, or guitar. It was developed by Europeans in the 18th century as an evolution of the older Mandora (Mandola). Mandolin evolved in Italy and Germany.

What are the types of Mandolins?

There are two different types of Mandolins:

Round Backed Mandolin: It has a round bottom and hence the name. It is made of wood. Strips of wood are glued together to form a bowl-like structure

Carved Top Mandolin: It has an arched top. It is also made of wood. They are commonly used in American folk music

What is the modern Mandolin?

The modern form and propositions of the mandolin are influenced by the instrument’s maker Pasquale Vinaccia of Naples (1806 – 1882). The famous compositions made using the mandolin include a concerto by Vivaldi, the serenade in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, and certain sections of Stravinsky’s ballet Agon. Sajjad Hussain and Kishore Desai are among the famous exponents of this instrument in India.

The origin of the Mandolin is Europe. It belongs to the lute family of instruments. The lute musical instruments have hollow cavities where the sounds produced by the strings are echoed.

Construction of Mandolin

The mandolin has a resonator. This resonator is attached to the neck of the instrument. Strings run between the neck and the tailpiece. Strings float over a bridge.

What is Neopolitan style Mandolin?

It is a Roman style of mandolin. As compared to the other mandolins the Neopolitan mandolins are more narrow and curved.

Why is Mandolin in News?

Recently, the Indian Prime Minister talked of this instrument’s use in Indian cinema music. He also mentioned the late Uppalapu Srinivas, famously known as ‘Mandolin’ Srinivas.
