What are deciduous forests?

A forest comprising of trees that lose their leaves at some season of the year are known as deciduous forests.

  • In the case of the Monsoon Forests, like those of India and Burma, the trees shed their leaves during the hot season so as to protect themselves against excessive moisture loss by evaporation.
  • In the case of the deciduous forests of the cool intermediate lands, like those of north-west Europe, the trees shed their leaves during the autumn (known as the ‘fall’ in America because then the leaves are falling), to protect themselves against the cold and frost of winter.
