Western Railways begins branding of its locomotives to improves its non-freight revenue

On February 3, 2020, the Western Railways launched out branding of electric locomotives for the first time. This will help the Railways earn additional revenue of 1.05 crores of rupees.

Highlights

Around 10 locomotives have been branded so far. Railways has earned 223.53 crores of rupees from non-fare revenues. The step being initiated as the passenger fares dipped by 400 crores of rupees. The Western Railways is also facing deficit in freight loading. Therefore, branding is essential and will help to fill in the deficit faced by the Western Railways.

Indian Railways

The total revenue of Indian Railways is 1.97 lakh crores (2018-19). Apart from transporting freight and passengers, the Railways also earn from UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Indian Railways’s UNESCO World Heritage Site

Indian Railways has two UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes Mountain Railways of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was built by the Britishers between 1878 and 1887.

The Mountain Railways were built in the hill stations of India. There are three such railway lines. They are Nilgri Mountain Line in Tamil Nadu, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway line and Kalka-Shimla Railway line.
