West Bengal Recognised for Heritage Tourism: UNESCO

West Bengal has gained recognition as a premier heritage tourism destination by UNESCO , Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced. She emphasised the importance of heritage tourism in generating employment for youth. The state is actively developing heritage sites and enhancing religious tourism.

Development of Heritage Sites

The state government is focused on improving various heritage sites. Key locations include the Dakshineshwar and Kalighat temples, which are vital for attracting tourists and promoting cultural heritage.

Jagannath Temple in Digha

A new Jagannath Temple is under construction in Digha, is modelled after the famous one in Puri. The idol in Digha is crafted from marble, unlike the neem wood idol in Puri. A smaller neem wood idol has been created for daily worship. The temple will feature a large room for food offerings.

Employment Opportunities through Tourism

Tourism in West Bengal has created thousands of jobs. The state boasts diverse attractions, including mountains, forests, and the Sundarbans. Minister of State for Tourism, Indranil Sen, reported the establishment of 2,489 homestays and approximately 65% of these homestays are located in North Bengal.

Infrastructure Improvements

Plans are underway to build a bridge over the Muriganga River, will enhance access to Ganga Sagar Island. The annual Gangasagar Mela takes place here. Improved infrastructure is expected to elevate the fair’s status. It aims to become a leading pilgrimage destination, potentially rivaling the Kumbh Mela.
