The West Bengal government is currently engaged in legal and administrative process concerning the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. This follows a Supreme Court directive to update the list amid allegations of political bias. Background

In 2010, the West Bengal government added 77 communities to its OBC list. Of these, 75 were Muslim communities. This decision faced backlash, leading to a legal challenge. The court ordered the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes to prepare a new list.

On March 18, 2025, the state informed the court of its intention to conduct a fresh survey to reassess the OBC list. The Supreme Court granted the state three months to complete this task.
