Water for Cricket Fields Maintenance

Hearing the petition filed by an NGO, Friends the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered an expert committee to submit a report on ways to save water.

• The petition alleges that the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) of using RO-treated water for the upkeep of Feroz Shah Kotla ground.
• Also, it accuses power distribution company TPDDL of wasting 7,500 litres of water per day through the RO water plants it installed at 31 educational institutions.

Cricket and Water Problem

The cricket stadiums have come under the scanner for the amount of water used in maintaining the grounds and the pitches. It is estimated that about 15,000-20,000 litres of water is used daily to maintain a cricket pitch.

A PIL was filed at the Bombay High Court which censured the water wastage for maintaining grounds for IPL at the time the state of Maharashtra was going through a severe water crisis.

The Mumbai Cricket Association gave a written undertaking to the Bombay High Court that it will not use potable water for watering the pitches at the stadia where IPL matches were scheduled and instead use water conserved from rainwater harvesting system.
