Waiving Registration Charges for Electric Vehicles
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released a draft notification which proposes to waive registration charges for electric vehicles. The exemption would be applicable to all category of vehicles, including two-wheelers. The move is apparently aimed at promoting electric vehicles (EVs) in India.
The draft notification has been issued under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The draft proposes to exempt battery operated vehicles from payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of the new registration mark.
Promoting e-vehicles
The move is part of the government s effort to boost production of electric vehicles in the country and take their share to 15 per cent of total automobiles in the next five years. The government had earlier proposed green licence plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private e-vehicles and yellow for taxis.
