Voting trends in 2019 Lok Sabha Elections
India is the World’s largest democracy and the elections are the celebrations which uphold the democratic credentials of the country. The voting trends in the recently concluded Lok Sabha Elections reiterate the Indian credentials as the worlds largest democracy.
Voting Trends in 2019 Lok Sabha Elections
- An estimated 67.11 per cent of the 91 crores (910 million) voters casted their vote.
- The voter turnout was 66.40 per cent in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.
- It was the highest ever turnout recorded in any parliamentary polls in India.
- The Election Commission of India had cancelled polls to the Vellore constituency on the grounds of excessive use of money power. The poll panel is yet to announce a fresh date for elections in Vellore.
- Out of 18 lakh registered voters, 16.49 lakh had sent their postal ballots to their respective returning officers as on May 1.
- The gap between the male and female voters continued the downward trend. The gender gap in voter turnout stood at around 9 per cent in 2009. It went down to 1.4 per cent in 2014 and it was around 0.4 per cent in 2019.
- The voting percentage among women outnumbered men in 13 states and union territories whereas it was 10 states in 2014.
The numbers on the NOTA which has become increasingly popular will be available after the counting ends on May 23rd.
