Vietnam – Most Affordable Country for Expats in 2024

In 2024, a global study by InterNations found that Vietnam was the best place for expats to live on a budget. This is the fourth year in a row that Vietnam has been at the top of the list, making it even more popular with expats who want to live abroad cheaply.

Study Overview

The InterNations study polled more than 12,000 expatriates in 174 countries and regions about things like cost of living, financial happiness, and the extra money they had to spend. This in-depth study looked at 53 places around the world and looked at things like quality of life, digital access, housing, language, job prospects, salary, and job security.

Key Findings

Vietnam, along with other expat-friendly places like Colombia and Indonesia, was looked at in several different areas:

  • Housing: Vietnam came in second place worldwide and was praised for making it easy to find cheap housing.
  • Work-Life Balance: Only 46% of expats in Vietnam work full-time, which is less than the average of 57% around the world.
  • Stress Levels: Many expats in Vietnam said they felt a lot less stressed than they did in their home countries.

These things make the country very appealing to people who want to live abroad without spending a lot of money.

Comments from InterNations

Kathrin Chudoba, CMO of InterNations, talked about how better the housing situation is in Southeast Asia. She said that Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia all have very affordable and easy-to-get-to housing. A British expat said that living in Vietnam was “stress-free” and a nice change from their busy work life in the UK. This shows that Vietnam is a good place for foreigners to live. Vietnam remains a top choice for people who want to improve their living while keeping costs low by moving abroad. It’s a great place for expats to live because it’s cheap, there’s a good mix between work and life, and the quality of life is generally high.
