Vice President calls to increase production of Solar PV cells
Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, called upon states to increase the production of Solar PV sells and modules in India.

- He called to set up manufacturing plants in order to boost the production of solar PV cells and modules.
- He noted the importance of “Atma Nirbharta” in solar energy through active participation of states.
- He also suggested to invest in training and upskilling the workforce in order to adopt latest technologies and highlighted the instance of the scheme of ‘Surya Mitras’.
Solar power plant at Pondicherry
He inaugurated a solar power plant of 2.4-Megawatt capacity at Pondicherry University in Union Territory of Puducherry. On this occasion, he highlighted the importance of green energies like wind, solar, and small hydro.
India’s solar capacity
India has been moving fast in becoming a global leader in the ‘energy transition’. With the total installed solar capacity of over 40 Gigawatts, India is ranked at fifth position in the world with respect to its solar power capacity.
Innovation in Solar sector
Vice President also highlighted the importance of innovation in solar sector. He suggested to exploring alternative avenues for installing ground-mounted PV systems. For instance, installation of floating solar plants on water and NTPC’s floating solar power plant of 100 MW capacity in Telangana.
Significance of such projects
Such innovative projects will help in improving employment prospects and will promote innovations and improvements in India’s domestic solar industry.
