US President Donald Trump visits India: Signs Defence Deals

On February 24, 2020, the US President Donald Trump visited India. He was accompanied by his wife, the first lady, Melania Trump, daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Along side his visit, India and US signed defence deals worth 3 billion USD.

Highlights

The President was welcomed by PM Modi in a traditional way at Ahmedabad airport. Mr Trump later visited Sabarmati Ashram and Taj Mahal. The leaders then addressed a large gathering at Motera stadium. India celebrated the visit of the US President by naming the event as “Namaste Trump”.

Defence Deal

India and US will sign two defence deals for helicopters. Around 24 MH-60R helicopters are to be signed for Indian Navy and six AH-64E helicopters are to be signed for Apache helicopters.

India-US

The defence relation between India and US began in 2005. The countries signed a framework to build a strategic defence cooperation between them. In 2012, the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) was launched. The DTTI implements Next Generation Protective Ensembles for Chem-bio protection. In 2015, a strategic vision for Asia Pacific (the now Indo Pacific) and the Indian Ocean Region was signed.
