US Election 2020: Joe Biden wins Presidency defeating Donald Trump

Joe Biden has won the US elections defeating Donald Trump. His Oath of Office as the 46th President of the US will be administered by the Chief Justice of Supreme Court. He is to assume office on January 20, 2021. The election results make Trump the first one term president since 1990. This year, the US vote counting was delayed. The delay in declaration of US Election results was due to several reasons. The foremost was that different state in the country adopt different polling, counting processes.

About Joe Biden

Joe Biden served as the 47^th Vice President during Obama administration between 2009 and 2017. In 2009, during the Great Recession, he oversaw the infrastructure spending of America.

US Election

The election for the President of United States is held once in four years. A person cannot run for US President election more than two times.

Indian-American Role in the Election

The Indian-American diaspora in the United States made a considerable difference in the US Presidential polls. There are 4 million Indian diaspora in US. Around 50,000 Indian Americans attended the “Howdy Modi” event at Houston NRG Stadium.

Indian-Americans are the second largest immigrant group in the US after Mexicans. New York has the largest Indian American population followed by Chicago and Washington.

Also, the vice-Presidential candidate running for the election is an Indian American, Kamala Harris.

Impact on India

India and US have seen upswing in defence relations in the last few years. Joe Biden has been a strong supporter of India-US relations. In 2006, as a Senator Biden pushed other Democrats to back India-US Civil Nuclear Deal.
