What do you understand by Evidence-Based Policing (EBP)? How EBP can mitigate the problems faced by police personnel in India? Explain.
Evidence based policing (EBP) is an extension of evidence-based medicine, evidence-based management and evidence-based policy. EBP refers to an approach to policy making and tactical decision-making for police departments.
EBP refers to improved decision making and decision making based on real time data and analytics.
Components of Evidence based policing
- Identifying hotspots of crime, monitoring patterns of behavior of individuals.
- Encouraging citizen participation.
- Developing strategies which can best fight the crime. This aids in efficient decision making.
- Crime analysis in everyday policing so that policing is more effective.
- EBP is abed on three pillars Targeting, Testing and tracking.
EBP for mitigating problems faced by police in India
- The trust deficit towards police is an obstacle for efficient policing in India. EBP will play an enabling role in bridging the trust deficit of public towards police.
- Politicisation of police force has become a bottleneck in ensuring effective policing. EBP will find ways to reduce the political interference in policing.
- Police are the first responders during terror attacks or crimes. EBP will provide a way to evolve a policing system which is more efficient, responsive and trained.
There are two areas in which EBP can deliver. They are prediction and prevention. EBP will aid in making policing in India SMART (Sensitive, Motivated, Agile, Responsive and tech-savy).
