What are Non communicable Diseases? Enumerate the provisions of the National Programme for prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and strokes (NPCDCS).

Non communicable diseases are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behaviour factors. These are also known aschronic diseases. The main types of NCDsare cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes.
The country is facing a rapid health transition with a rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases. These are emerging as the leading cause of death in India accounting for over 42% of all deaths. Cardiovascular diseases will be the largest cause of death and disability in India by 2020. These NCDs are caused due to the raised blood pressure, cholesterol, tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, and obesity.
Considering the rising burden of NCDs Government of India initiated an integrated National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancers, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS).It was under theNational Health Mission. The provisions of the programme are as follows:

  • Behavior change with involvement of community, civil society, community-based organizations, media etc.
  • Chronic Non-Communicable diseases, especially Cancer, Diabetes, CVDs and Stroke should be properly diagnosed and treated
  • Provide support for diagnosis and cost-effective treatment at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care
  • Provide support for development of database of NCDs through a robust Surveillance System

NCD poses a threat to achieve 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includesa target of reducing premature deaths from NCDs by one-third by 2030. The NCDs disproportionately affect the poor, impoverish families, and place a growing burden on health care systems.
