Women Empowerment refers to the creation of an environment for women where they can make decisions of their own for their personal benefits as well as for the society. Women’s empowerment is a key to achieving sustainable and equitable development.
Empowerment of women in a nation is largely determined by three factors, viz. economic, social and political identity. Because political empowerment gave the platform to fight for their rights, similarly economic empowerment helps women in taking decisions, social empowerment of women is an important step towards promoting gender equality which is the basic requisite for women empowerment. Lack of empowerment of women in any one of these fields women empowerment is not possible
Since independence, India is taking number of steps to empower women socially, economically and politically. Providing reservations in local government bodies is one of the steps to empower women politically, with increased political role, women can also now engage in social movements and thus open up an additional front to fight for their rights.
Recent introduction of gender budgeting is one of the step towards economic empowerment of women. At macro level, Gender budgeting helps policy makers to specifically focus on the issues related to women
Government is also taking number of steps to empower women socially, by avoiding lot of derogatory practices and passing various laws like Hindu succession act, intervening in matters like triple talaq and initiating steps towards uniform civil code.
