Peninsular India is a stable region with very less seismic activities, however the region has witnessed several earthquakes. Discuss with examples.
Peninsular India has been a low seismicity region due to its old focus structure and compact landmasses.
Features:
- Volcanic rock origin – Deccan traps.
- Stable landmarks and rift structures, e.g. Narmada rift.
- Low earthquake vulnerability.
- Occasional crust faults, e.g. Bhima fault.
Emergence of seismicity:
- Occurrence of intense earthquakes.
- Rising landslide frequency.
- Rock falls and land slump.
- Mild tremors in Deccan.
Reasons:
- Dam-induced seismicity.
- Unsustainable infrastructure.
- River flow changes.
- Burden of hill tourism.
India must integrate Sendai framework in its disaster planning.
