Increasing the scope of skilling is imperative for changing economic and demographic structure in India. Assess the success of skill India mission till now.

Skilling is instrumental in converting the mere population of a country into a human resource.

Importance of the skilling:

  1. Changing economic structure –
    • World is moving towards more sophisticated technologies, the skilling gap is increasing.
    • Provide employment to the unemployed youth in the new emerging avenues like machine learning, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, logistics, etc.
    • To reap the benefits of demographic dividend of India.
    • Need to pull people out from agriculture and shift them to industrial and service sector through skilling.
    • To pull people out of poverty and promote social economic empowerment.
  1. Changing demographic structure –
    • 12 million people or entering workforce each year, thus providing them with skills is important.
    • More focus should be on vocational education to provide them with adequate skills.
    • Promoting exports and enhancing industrial production.

Skill India mission was formulated by the government to provide skilling to 50 million population by 2022. It is being monitored at the apex level by the Prime Minister.

How far it has come:

  • Launched PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana under the mission to train 10 million people by 2022.
  • NSDC, a public private corporation, is tasked with building new infrastructure and skilling institutions in the country.
  • Skills loans schemes have been started, which provides loans from 5000 to 1.5 lakh.
  • National skills qualification framework has been launched under the mission to create a framework for improving the quality of skills.

“Skilling for all” should be the aim of government to reap the instrumental demographic dividend of India.
