Highlight the factors that have led to formation of a dedicated Indo Pacific division in the MEA. What are the challenges for India in the Indo Pacific region?
The Indo Pacific region has become vital for the foreign policy of every country. All the P5 nations are showing strategic interest in the Indian Ocean.
Reasons for dedicated Indo Pacific division:
- To coordinate with the other P5 countries commands, e.g. US-Indo-Pacific command.
- For a targeted focus towards Indo Pacific and an independent policy in the region.
- To bolster Indian claims of net security provider in the region.
- To contain the threats of Indian Ocean like piracy, trafficking.
- To coordinate better with the Indian Ocean countries and secure the sea lanes of communication.
- Renewed focus towards island nations and the trade with Africa.
Challenges faced by India in IOR:
- The growing assertiveness and presence of China (String of pearls, One Belt One Road initiative).
- Volatility of the middle east and threat of radicalization.
- Constant threat of piracy and trafficking and other criminal activities in high seas.
- Tackling the problems of sea level rise and climate change.
- Maintaining the relations with Pakistan and containing its presence in IOR.
- Lack of capability of the Indian Navy to cover the entire IOR.
IOR in recent times has assumed significant importance. Government has already launched Project Mausam, IORA, RIMES, IONS, BIMSTEC, etc to increase its presence in the Indian Ocean.
