“Economists in India have put forward the reasons for and against the question of whether India is over-populated.” Discuss presenting your view.
No doubt, that high population growth rate in India is a cause of worry, but to judge whether India is over-populated or not is a cumbersome task, since there is no specific criterion to judge whether a country is over-populated or not. Economists in India have put forward the reasons for and against the question of whether India is over-populated.
Argument against the perception that India is over populated
Some economists argue that there are enough natural resources in the country. Output can be sufficiently increased by exploiting and utilizing the natural resources judiciously. There is enough land to accommodate population and enough land for agriculture to meet domestic demand. Hence, there is also rising per-capita income which proved that India is not over-populated. Population density in India is low compared to many other countries.
Argument favoring the perception that India is overpopulated
The standard of living in India is very low; the economic growth of the country is not able to create enough employment opportunities for the rising population. Further low advancement in technology and lack of skilled planning may not be able to increase the agricultural and other productivity. Thus, any further increase in the population will prove to be fatal for poor families.
