Updation of National Population Register (NPR) gets Cabinet Approval
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi Chaired Union Cabinet has given its approval on Tuesday, 24th December 2019 for the updation of the National Population Register (NPR). The NPR will cover all states and union territories of India except Assam, and the estimated cost for the updation of NPR will be around Rs 3,941.35 crore.
The National Population Register (NPR) is a Register of the usual residents in the country and is mandatory for every citizen of India and is being prepared at five different levels starting from local covering villages/sub towns, sub-district, district and in state and national level. The NPR is conducted under the provisions mentioned in the Citizenship Act 1955 and the as per the issuance of National Identity Cards and Registration of the Citizens of the country mentioned in the Citizenship Rules 2003.
The NPR was first prepared in the year 2010 by collecting data along the Census of India 2011 house listing data. The data was updated by conducting door to door surveys in 2015 followed by the digitization of the data updated by seeding it with Aadhar. The NPR will be updated during the Census 2021 Houselisting Phase, which will be conducted in all states (except Assam) and union territories across the country from April 2020 to September 2020.
