Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme

The Government of India made revisions to the pension system for freedom fighters on August 15, 2016, aim of honoring the contributions of freedom fighters to India’s independence and providing them with enhanced benefits.

Revised Pension System

The previous dearness relief system was replaced with a dearness allowance system, which aligns with the allowances provided to Central Government employees. The dearness allowance is updated biannually, ensuring timely financial support.

Key Benefits for Freedom Fighters

Freedom fighters are entitled to several benefits. They receive free lifetime railway passes in 2nd/3rd AC on Duronto trains and 1st/2nd AC on all other trains, including premium services like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. Additionally, they have access to free medical facilities under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) and in hospitals managed by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

Accommodation and Welfare Support

Freedom fighters can enjoy free accommodation and meals at State Bhawan in New Delhi for themselves, their dependents, and one companion. Regular welfare checks are conducted by Collectors or Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to resolve pension-related issues.

To facilitate easier pension transfers, dependents now have up to one year to apply after a freedom fighter’s death. Pensions for dependents are sanctioned from the date of death, rather than the application date.

Life certificates are now required to be submitted annually instead of biannually. Banks are empowered to restart pensions that were stopped due to delayed life certificate submissions for up to three years.

Introduction of Digital Processes

The submission of Aadhaar-linked life certificates can now be done via the Jeevan Praman Portal, which includes SMS reminders to ensure timely submissions.

A new Know Your Freedom Fighter/Family (KYFF/F) form has been introduced. This form is designed to maintain updated records for better tracking and verification of freedom fighters and their families.
