Update : Erroneous reports about the Filing of Income tax Return
There were several reports in the social media that a few taxpayers were facing issues in filing the returns.
What had happened?
Unverified reports in the social media claimed that the large scale changes were made in the Income-tax Return (ITR) forms including ITR-2 and ITR-3.
Apparently, it was claimed that this created problems in the filling of income tax returns by the taxpayers.
What was the Central Board of Direct Taxes’s response?
The CBDT has said that no changes have been made in ITR filings. It has clarified that all software utility for e-filing of all the ITR forms had been released long back.
However, the software was continuously been updated and this created an illusion that new software had been adopted.
What is the Central Board of Direct Taxes?
While earlier known as the Central Board of Revenue, it was then split in two as the administration of all taxes become too cumbersome for one board to handle. Thus, it was then split into two boards- Central Board of Direct Taxes and Central Board of Excise and Customs.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes is a statutory authority which functions under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963. The officials of the Board will also function as a Division of the Ministry that will deal with matters relating to levy and collection of direct taxes. A Chairman and six Members comprise the board of the CBDT.
