UNSC questions rights granted to minorities in China & Pakistan

In a special UNSC council meeting organized on minority rights, the Nations of Pakistan and People’s Republic of China (PRC) were criticized for their alleged lack of dignified rights granted to the minorities living in their territory.

What has happened?

• Poland, which is the current UNSC chair for the month of August, had organized a special Arria-Formula Meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the ?Advancing the Safety and Security of Persons Belonging to Religious Minorities in Armed Conflict?.
• Pakistan and China have been targeted to allegely violating the living conditions of the minorities living in their territories.
• China and Pakistan have been castigated for the oppression of their Christians, Ahmadis, Hindus, Uighurs, and Other ethnic minorities.
• In China, it was stated that several members of minority and ethnic-religious groups in China which include ethnic Uighur, Kazakhs, Tibetan Buddhists, Catholics, Protestants, and Falun Gong face severe persecution and repression and the council requested China to end its war on faith and to ensure the respect for the religious freedom of all.
• In Pakistan, the Ahmadis, Hindus, and Christians have been targeted by terror groups and the government has done little to protect them.
• In the same meeting, the UN chief Antonio Guterres called for the end of the persecution of religious groups.
