United Nations suspended rotation and deployment of Peace keeping forces
On April 8, 2020, the United Nations announced that the organization is suspending tis peace keeping forces till June 30. This is being done to mitigate the risk of transmission of COVID-19 virus.
About UN Peace Keeping
The United Nations Peace Keeping was founded in 1945. There are more than 90,000 active personnel currently working in peacekeeping mission of the UN. This year the United Nations allocated around 6.7 billion USD for its UN peace keeping mission.
The force is sometimes addressed as Blue Berets or Blue Helmets.
United Nations Security Council
It is the responsibility of the UNSC to maintain international peace and security. Thus, the international community always looks up to the UNSC to authorise peace keeping operations. The Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter empowers UNSC to deploy peace keeping forces in a region. However, the UNSC is constituted of only 5 permanent members out of 198 member nations. They are USA, China, Russia, France and UK. There are other 15 members whose chairs are rotated among the 198 numbers based on voting.
