United Nations adopts first resolution on Corona Virus

On April 3, 2020, the United Nations approved the resolution that called upon international cooperation to fight against COVID-19. The resolution also calls for its member nations to adopt multilateralism.

Highlights

The United Nations resolution was adopted by 188 nations. This is the first resolution adopted by the organization since the pandemic. The resolution called for intensified international cooperation, exchange of information, applying relevant guidelines for the WHO.

Resolution in silence mode

There was no meeting held to pass the resolution. The resolution was adopted in silent mode. The UNGA has announced that the draft resolution is to stay open till April 2 for the member countries to object. If not objected the organization will circulate a confirmation letter among its member countries.

Significance

The resolution was adopted as the number of infected cases in the world crossed over 1 million. The UN addresses the deadly virus as the most challenging crisis since World War II.

The organization on March 23 also called for an “Immediate Cease Fire” all over the world in order to protect the people in conflict zones.
