Union Government mulls to build 200 low cost airports
The Government of India (GoI) announced to build 200 low cost airports in the next 20 years.
- Objective: To expand connectivity to Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
- Benefit: The development of low-frills airports will significantly reduce the cost of operations.
- Plan of Aviation ministry: To build 15 Greenfield airports, beside constructing low-cost airports.
- The Airports Authority of India has plans to invest Rs.1,500 crore for developing non-metro airports.
- At present, the non-metro airports accounts for just around 30 % of the country’s total air traffic, but the percentage is expected to jump to 45 % within the next few years.
Note: The Union Government also planned to invest over $120 billion in the development of airport infrastructure , improvement in connecting infrastructure , development of world class air navigation services infrastructure and other related activities to improve the air connectivity.
