Union Cabinet: MoU between India and UK in Medical Product Regulation approved

On November 4, 2020, the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved the MoU signed between India and UK in the field of medical product regulation. The MoU was signed between United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).

Key Highlights

The MoU will help establish fruitful cooperation in matters relating to medical products registration. The main areas of cooperation between the authorities are as follows

  • To exchange safety information
  • To participate in seminars, symposia, scientific and practical conferences
  • To exchange cooperation in Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Laboratory Practices, Good Distribution Practices and Good Pharmacovigilance Practices.
  • To promote regulatory framework
  • To exchange information and control unlicensed imports and exports.

India-UK

In 2010, India and UK signed Civil Nuclear Cooperation Declaration to promote facilitation of cooperation in nuclear field. This includes nuclear trade between scientific institutions of the two countries. India and UK conduct “Ajeya Warrior” Exercise in Salisbury Plain in southern England.

UK has the second largest number of students from India. Also, within European Union, UK is the top trading partner of India.

In 2017, Access India Programme was launched with the help of UK India Business Council to help the SMEs of UK export more to India.

India and UK celebrated ‘2017’ as the “UK-India Year of Culture”. In 2017, India celebrated its 70 years of independence from British rule. The relation between India and UK is considered by the countries as “New special Relationship”.

Why is India important for UK?

The British forces could be deployed in the Indian Ocean Region, Far East and Middle East. This is mainly because of strategic location of India. Also, UK companies look India as one of the biggest markets in the world.
